Physiotherapy

Treatment to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient's mobility, function, and well-being. Physiotherapy helps you through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention and health and fitness. Physiotherapists get you involved in your own recovery.

Melanie returns to Thunder Bay, after a decade in BC, where she worked for Vancouver Coastal Health in a hospital-based outpatient hand therapy program. She is excited to offer Certified Hand & Upper Limb Physiotherapy Treatment here in Thunder Bay, which includes assessment and treatment of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. Hand therapy provides optimal results for post-surgical and post-traumatic conditions, individuals with repetitive strain injuries, sports injuries, work-related injuries, osteoarthritis, and other conditions impacting the hand and upper-extremity. One of her favourite aspects of hand therapy is making custom splints for a variety of conditions, from carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis of the thumb, and wrist tendonitis, to trigger fingers, and mallet fingers.

Melanie also does Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) dry needling which can be particularly beneficial for those with trigger point or myofascial pain syndromes.

Melanie obtained her Master of Science in Physiotherapy from McMaster University in 2003, after completing her Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology at Lakehead University in 2001. Before moving out west, she worked at The Hand & Upper Limb Clinic here in Thunder Bay for 8 years.

She brings 19 years of experience in the profession and has been a Certified Hand Therapist for 11 years.

Michelle Boland graduated from the Massage Therapy Program at Sault College in 2002. That same year she became registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. She is also a long time member of the Registered Massage Therapists Association of Ontario. Michelle treats all ages, including infants and children. She enjoys working on all conditions, whether it be an acute injury, a chronic condition, post surgery or a massage for overall health and well being. Over the years she has taken a number of courses to gain knowledge and techniques that she incorporates into her treatments as she feels fit. Michelle loves her work and finds nothing more gratifying than to see the benefits of massage resolve an issue and her clients reach their goals, feel better and get back to activities of life. Dr. Lopez was born and raised in Thunder Bay. At a young age, she participated in sports and experienced Chiropractic care for the first time. She began exploring career paths that encompassed both sports and chiropractic. Her education began at Lakehead University with an Honours Bachelors Kinesiology degree. She went on to Northwestern Health Sciences University, in Minnesota, where she received her Doctorate degree in Chiropractic.

During her schooling, Dr. Lopez gained knowledge and certification in sports injuries, upper and lower extremity care, motion palpation, and extended knowledge on prenatal, and pediatric care. She uses many techniques including Muscle Relase Technique (MRT) and Instrumented Assisted Soft Tissue Modality (IASTM), soft tissue therapy, manual adjusting, and rehabilitative exercise. She is also certified in providing Functional Integrated Acupuncture.

Dr. Shane McCormack has maintained a Chiropractic practice in Northwestern Ontario since 2002. His patient centred approach emphasizes the role of soft tissue in pain syndromes. He is a strong advocate of a multidisciplinary approach. He believes that the goal of passive therapies should always bring patients to the point where they can become more independent in their care, via exercise and active healthy living. ​ In addition to private practice at MOVE Therapy, he is an Advanced Practice Clinician with the Rapid Access Clinic at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, in the Low Back Pain and Spine assessment programs. ​ Dr. McCormack enjoys being active and outside time with his family during his time off.

Brian has been working as a Physiotherapist in Thunder Bay since 2003, providing personalized care to patients with various orthopaedic ailments. He has completed several post-graduate courses incorporating various manual therapy techniques and functional strength training concepts.

Brian looks forwards to providing movement based treatment and a rehabilitative approach to your care with the goal of returning you back to your previous physical prowess and beyond.

Kirsten’s passion for physiotherapy comes from a deep love of sport. A former high-level rugby player, she was drawn to the profession to help people stay healthy and active. Kirsten graduated from McMaster University with her Masters in Physiotherapy in 2010. Since then, she’s worked in both private practice and pediatrics. She has completed courses in manual therapy, craniosacral therapy, and myofascial release.

Kirsten provides a collaborative treatment approach combining hands-on therapy with exercise prescription and education. Her goal is to support clients in addressing their movement dysfunction and resuming their activities stronger and more balanced.

Her primary areas of interest are pediatric injuries, torticollis, plagiocephaly and spinal alignment, post-operative rehabilitation, and hip, knee and ankle dysfunctions. Kirsten is looking forward to bringing her passion for working with pediatric injuries and conditions back to private practice.

When Kirsten is not in the office you will find her out hiking, mountain biking, running and enjoying time with her husband and two kids.
